Winter Imagination

Selection of cyanotypes on watercolour paper created since 2019. The title Winter Imagination is inspired by a line in the book Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner: “They smelt of woods, of dark rustling woods like the wood to whose edge she came so often in the country of her autumn imagination.” It was in a location like this one Lolly experienced a profound development in her life. I enjoy the consideration of the the ‘edge’ when it comes to cyanotype-making, a crucial decision in the chemical’s painterly application.

I often, by chance, find myself making cyanotypes with winter sun which although challenging, offers many more variables than summer sun. The cool blue, of course, lends well to winter mood – a haziness, mist and uneven texture.
